Captain Corelli's Mandolin

The Ionian Sea beside Cephallonia offer a great look across the bay towards Ithaca. These blue skies looked down on the island’s wartime occupiers, too, the innocent Cephallonia landscape a witness to the massacre of the Italian division by the Germans following the Italian surrender in 1943 in World War II. The turmoil of history has brought unexpected reward foe island the loving descriptions of Cephallonia and those brutal events in Louis de Bernières’ epic novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin bringing more tourists to the island in recent years.

This key tourist destination rose to fame with the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) based on a book by Louis de Bernieres and starring Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz. Many brilliant movie picture takes on one of the biggest Antisamos Beach.

Success of the best seller 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin', had been decided to film this book at its original location, Kefalonia (Cephalonia). One of the main reasons to film this in Kefalonia (Cephalonia) and not at studios, was that it was very difficult to find beautiful and natural place and at the same time quiet enough in summer. Most of the filming take place in Sami, a very beautifull village 9 km south of Agia Efimia with one of the main Kefalonia port.
